Sciatic Nerve Pain Treatment

Shooting, burning, stabbing pains from the lower area of the back with, at times, additional pain that runs through the buttocks, down into one or both of the legs are all symptoms of an irritated, possibly pinched nerve often called Sciatica. Our Greenville Chiropractor Dr. Matt Wink helps people relieve this debilitating sharp pain, the burning, the stabbing leg and buttocks pain that leaves you feeling helpless… it can be treated, safely and effectively for long term relief.

“I had just gotten to the point where I was beginning to think I would never be able to get rid of my sciatic nerve pain. My family doctor told me it was my leg or hip, but the surgion said my hip was fine. I tried everything, including physical therapy, which helped but it came right back. My wife insisted I go see Dr. Wink after hearing about him from a family friend. I almost backed out but I am so thankful I came in. I feel like a new man.” ~Jerry T. Greenville SC

If left untreated, this condition will eventually lead to muscle wasting, numbness in the leg and foot, and constant tingling down to the tip of the toes and eventually even loss of bladder control and full blown Neuropathy. The Sciatic Nerve

The Sciatic nerve is actually the LONGEST nerve in your body. It is a bundled system of FIVE nerves that exit from your lower lumbar spine and sacral region. The nerves group together at the piriformis muscle in the buttocks to form one large sciatic nerve. The nerve then descends down the back of each leg. Your sciatic nerve’s main job is to provide strength and sensation to the legs and connect other major muscles to the spinal cord. A blockage or issues with the sciatic nerve can cause muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, and even pain.

Symptoms not a diagnosis

Often people think that sciatica is their main concern but it is not the cause of the irritation at the nerve root. It’s actually a set of symptoms that you may experience.

Some conditions that cause sciatic pain:

-The most common is herniated or slipped disc

-Piriformis Syndrome, which is the muscle in the buttocks the becomes tight or spasms

-Spinal Stenosis, which is narrowing of the spinal canal that creates pressure on the nerves

– Spondylolisthesis, which is a slippage of a vertebra and narrowing the nerve exit

-Last but not last, general wear and tear on your low back

Risk factors

As we age our changes of getting sciatica increases due to the fact our spine ages with us. There are many factors that play a role in the structure of our spines like obesity, diabetes, your occupation, and prolonged sitting. We also can get herniated disc’s and bone spurs with lack of chiropractic care.

Supporting Research

Before making any drastic decisions, like surgery, find other non-invasive options. Chiropractic care and spinal manipulations are a worthwhile for treating the underlying cause of your pain and symptoms associated with sciatic pain. Studies like the one published in Spine in 2006 show that manipulations to the spine aided the relief of pain due to acute low back and sciatic pain. Another study that was published in 2010 showed that SIXTY percent of patients that experienced some sort of sciatica pain received that same relief from chiropractic adjustments as they did with spinal surgery.
